Simple Tips To Set The Stage For Local SEO In 2015

After Google’s most recent local algorithm update, the rules have changed for local SEO. Columnist Greg Gifford discusses how you can do well in local search in 2015.

The year is almost over, and many businesses are starting to look forward to 2015 and discuss their marketing plans. Luckily, David Mihm, the local search guru at Moz, just released his annual Local Search Ranking Factors survey, which helps give us local marketers more insight into which ranking factors matter the most.

The survey shows a definite shift toward more traditional web ranking factors. Last year’s Local Search Ranking Factors survey had Google Places and Citations weighted heavily, but this year’s study shows that on-site signals and links are the most powerful factors.

This shift is consistent with Google’s recent local ranking algorithm update,Pigeon. Many Local SEOs claimed they weren’t hit by Pigeon – but it’s more likely that, because they took a more wholesome approach to local SEO, their sites simply had more authority to begin with.

The most important point we try to hammer home to potential clients is that you can’t fool the nerds at Google. Everything you do, both on and off your site, should be working toward the end goal of making your user experience awesome… not trying to fool Google into placing you higher on search results pages.

So, taking what we’ve been able to figure out about the Pigeon update and adding in the results from the 2014 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, here are two simple tips to help you set the stage for Local Search success in 2015:

  1. Be Awesome
  2. Earn Awesome Links

Yes, it’s really that simple… but at the same time, it’s really not that easy for local businesses. Take a look at your competitors in your vertical – nearly every website has the same or similar content, and most sites don’t have that many inbound links.

Okay, So How Are You Supposed To Be Awesome?

The best thing you can do for Local Search success in 2015 is to take all the energy you put into trying to fool Google and instead use that energy to make your site better.

Take a long, hard look at your site and look at your competitors’ sites. What can you do to be better? You know that your potential customers will be looking at multiple sites, so make your site the best in your vertical.

Make sure you’re avoiding these common pitfalls – they’re all basic, but we still see far too many sites tripping up on these:

  1. No Home Page Content. Your customers (and search engines) need to know what you’re all about. If your home page has a slider/banner and just a few sentences, you need to add more useful content there immediately.
  2. Only A Few Sentences On A Page. Your customers (and search engines) are checking your website for useful, relevant information. If you offer a product or service, don’t just say, “We sell X, call us for more information!” Today’s shoppers want immediate information, so you need to pack every page with useful content.
  3. Spamming Keywords. Far too many websites rely on this outdated tactic. You’re not going to rank well everywhere in your state simply because you listed out 100 cities separated by commas on your home page. Does that huge list of cities provide useful information for customers? No. Does it help you rank in Google? Definitely not. Get rid of the junk and populate your site with relevant, informative content instead.
  4. Awful Title Tags. You’ve got about 500 pixels of width for your title tags; anything longer will be truncated when it’s displayed in search results. The title tag should summarize the page – it shouldn’t be a huge chunk of keywords you’re trying to rank for. Put your primary keyword phrase at the beginning and your business name at the end. If you’ve got 100 keywords stuffed into your title tag, you just look desperate.

Don’t Forget Your Local Optimization

With on-site signals now carrying so much weight, it’s more important than ever to have your local optimization ducks in a row. It won’t do you any good to bang out a ton of citations if your site doesn’t include the local signals that Google expects it to have.

Again, these are old-school basics, but we hardly see any websites correctly optimizing for local areas:

  1. Include City/ST in your title tag. Remember, the title tag is incredibly important for optimization, and including your city and state is an important signal for local relevancy.
  2. Include City/ST in your H1 heading. It doesn’t have to be the entire heading in and of itself — what’s important here is to include your city and state in the page heading to further show local relevancy.
  3. Include City/ST in your content. Far too many sites forget to include City/ST information inside the site content. Optimizing for local search won’t work unless you’re talking about your local area in your content.
  4. Include City/ST in your alt text on images. It’s amazing how many times we see sites that don’t include alt text. Remember, Google can’t see what’s in your images, so alt text helps provide a better understanding of your page content. Including City/ST information can really help boost local relevancy.
  5. Include City/ST in your URL. If you’ve got the ability to edit your URL structure, try to include your city and state information in your URLs. Again, this can go a long way toward providing a stronger local signal to both customers and Google.Important Note: if you’re going to update your URLs, don’t forget to set up 301 redirects so that the old address is permanently pointed to the new one.

These are all just specific tactics to help with the main goal: to make your site more awesome. Stop thinking about how to make your site rank, and start thinking about how to make your site the best in your niche. That’s how you’re going to get your site to rank better and convert more visitors.

How to Build Backlinks

It is out of question that quality backlinks are crucial to SEO success. More, the question is how to get them. While with on-page content optimization it seems easier because everything is up to you to do and decide, with backlinks it looks like you have to rely on others to work for your success. Well, this is partially true because while backlinks are links that start on another site and point to yours, you can discuss with the Web master of the other site details like the anchor text, for example. Yes, it is not the same as administering your own sites – i.e. you do not have total control over backlinks – but still there are many aspects that can be negotiated.

Getting Backlinks the Natural Way

The idea behind including backlinks as part of the page rank algorithm is that if a page is good, people will start linking to it. And the more backlinks a page has, the better. But in practice it is not exactly like this. Or at least you cannot always rely on the fact that your contents is good and people will link to you. Yes, if your content is good and relevant you can get a lot of quality backlinks, including from sites with similar topic as yours (and these are the most valuable kind of backlinks, especially if the anchor text contains your keywords) but what you get without efforts could be less than what you need to successfully promote your site. So, you less than what you need to successfully promote your site. So, you will have to resort to other ways of acquiring quality backlinks as described next.

Ways to Build Backlinks

Even if plenty of backlinks come to your site the natural way, additional quality backlinks are always welcome and the time you spend building them is not wasted. Among the acceptable ways of link building are getting listed in directories, posting in forums, blogs and article directories. The unacceptable ways include inter-linking (linking from one site to another site, which is owned by the same owner or exists mainly for the purpose to be a link farm), linking to spam sites or sites that host any kind of illegal content, purchasing links in bulk, linking to link farms, etc.

The first step in building backlinks is to find the places from which you can get quality backlinks. A valuable assistant in this process is the Backlink Builder tool. When you enter the keywords of your choice, the Backlink Builder tool gives you a list of sites where you can post an article, message, posting, or simply a backlink to your site. After you have the list of potential backlink partners, it is up to you to visit each of the sites and post your content with the backlink to your site in it.

You might wonder why sites as those, listed by the Backlink Builder tool provide such a precious asset as backlinks for free. The answer is simple – they need content for their site. When you post an article, or submit a link to your site, you do not get paid for this. You provide them for free with something they need – content – and in return they also provide you for free with something you need – quality backlinks. It is a free trade, as long as the sites you post your content or links are respected and you don’t post fake links or content.

Getting Listed in Directories

If you are serious about your Web presence, getting listed in directories like DMOZ, Yahoo, Jasmine Directory and others quality directories is a must – not only because this is a way to get some quality backlinks for free, but also because this way you are easily noticed by both search engines and potential visitors. Generally inclusion in search directories is free but the drawback is that sometimes you have to wait a couple of months before you get listed in the categories of your choice.

Forums and Article Directories

Generally search engines index forums so posting in forums and blogs is also a way to get quality backlinks with the anchor text you want. If the forum or blog is a respected one, a backlink is valuable. However, in some cases the forum or blog administrator can edit your post, or even delete it if it does not fit into the forum or blog policy. Also, sometimes administrators do not allow links in posts, unless they are relevant ones. In some rare cases (which are more an exception than a rule) the owner of a forum or a blog would have banned search engines from indexing it and in this case posting backlinks there is pointless.

While forum postings can be short and do not require much effort, submitting articles to directories can be more time-consuming because generally articles are longer than posts and need careful thinking while writing them. But it is also worth and it is not so difficult to do.

Content Exchange and Affiliate Programs

Content exchange and affiliate programs are similar to the previous method of getting quality backlinks. For instance, you can offer to interested sites RSS feeds for free. When the other site publishes your RSS feed, you will get a backlink to your site and potentially a lot of visitors, who will come to your site for more details about the headline and the abstract they read on the other site.

Affiliate programs are also good for getting more visitors (and buyers) and for building quality backlinks but they tend to be an expensive way because generally the affiliate commission is in the range of 10 to 30 %. But if you have an affiliate program anyway, why not use it to get some more quality backlinks?

News Announcements and Press Releases

Although this is hardly an everyday way to build backlinks, it is an approach that gives good results, if handled properly. There are many sites (for instance, here is a list of some of them) that publish for free or for a fee news announcements and press releases. A professionally written press release about an important event can bring you many, many visitors and the backlink from a respected site to yours is a good boost to your SEO efforts. The tricky part is that you cannot release press releases if there is nothing newsworthy. That is why we say that news announcements and press releases are not a commodity way to build backlinks.

Backlink Building Practices to Avoid

One of the practices that is to be avoided is link exchange. There are many programs, which offer to barter links. The principle is simple – you put a link to a site, they put a backlink to your site. There are a couple of important things to consider with link exchange programs. First, take care about the ratio between outbound and inbound links. If your outbound links are times your inbound, this is bad. Second (and more important) is the risk that your link exchange partners are link farms. If this is the case, you could even be banned from search engines, so it is too risky to indulge in link exchange programs.

Linking to suspicious places is something else that you must avoid. While it is true that search engines do not punish you if you have backlinks from such places because it is supposed that you have no control over what bad guys link to, if you enter a link exchange program with the so called bad neighbors and you link to them, this can be disastrous to your SEO efforts. For more details about bad neighbors, check the Bad Neighborhood article. Also, beware of getting tons of links in a short period of time because this still looks artificial and suspicious.

Start an Online Store With No Skills, No Stuff — And Now No Money

Source :

THE IDEA SEEMS so obvious once it occurs to you: Why don’t I make a comfortable passive income selling things online? Why, I could even do that kind of work from the comfort of my own home!

After all, starting an online store today has become simpler than ever. You don’t need to build a website or an online shopping cart yourself — a cloud-based company such as BigCommerce can handle that for you. Marketing? Try Google AdWords. Selling? Through Amazon and eBay, I can reach hundreds of millions of customers with a click.

OK, I’ve got all the computer stuff covered. But what about the stuff stuff? Don’t worry! A plug-and-play third-party logistics provider such as ShipWire will store your inventory in its own warehouses, connect with the least expensive parcel carriers and send your customers’ packages on their way. Don’t have anything to sell? Not a problem! Just decide what you want to sell, connect with a drop shipper who takes on all the inventory risk and costs for you and start stumping for clicks!

Of course, you’ll still have to spread some of your own money around to get started, won’t you? Maybe not: As Reuters first reported, eBay-owned PayPal (which would be happy to process payments for your new business) is ramping up its plans to move into small business financing. A U.K. pilot program for lending money to eBay sellers has ended and bigger rollout plans are in the works, while testing will soon be coming to the U.S. And the best part, according to the company: In the U.K. pilot program, instead of having to make regular monthly payments no matter how well (or badly) your business was doing, repayments consisted of PayPal taking a cut of any sale.

And PayPal isn’t alone. Amazon already offers financing to its third-party sellers. And Atlanta-based startup Kabbage just closed $75 million in debt financing to offer cash advances ranging from $500 to $50,000 to fledgling e-commerce entrepreneurs.

If I sound a little snarky about all this, that’s because getting started in e-commerce requires the same degree of eye-rolling skepticism demanded by any promise of friction-free riches. Just Google “start an online store” if you doubt me. You’re immediately pulled down into a cesspool of content-farm swill deploying rhetoric worthy of the multi-level marketing pitches you find tacked to telephone poles. If it’s this easy to gin up a moneymaking online store, then everybody will be doing it. And I’m sure economists have a formula that tells us just how inversely proportional “everybody doing it” is to the value added by (and money made by) each additional sucker who joins the mob.

That said, the opportunity presented by the sheer number of services available to a retail business purely through the browser is seductive. If you have a product that people really want, or have some cool, original ideas about how to sell cool, original products that other people are making, the escape velocity required to turn that idea into a genuine business is lower than ever. Forget software as a service. Welcome to the age of stuff as a service.

Networking and Participating in Groups

As we know, there are more than 800,000 sellers on Etsy. This means that there are a lot of people with same problems and others with solutions. Etsy Teams is a fantastic community where you can read a lot of interesting suggestions and share yours with others. There are a lot of groups dedicated to marketing; I strongly suggest you join some of them. I’m sure you will love them.
Here are some of my favorites:

There’s another type of group that will not increase your sales, but it will help you with your social media strategies, such as increasing your likes and your Facebook Edge Rank. In this group, users post links to their FB pages, the can you like them and they can like yours. The same thing happens with Twitter, Etsy like, etc. They’re both on Etsy and Facebook.

Buy your own domain name

Owning a domain name doesn’t mean you have to own a website; you can simply link the domain with your Etsy shop. The main reason to own your domain name is the SEO. In other words, it’ll be simpler for people find you through Google.
Another important reason is for communication outside of Etsy. With your own domain name, your customers can easily remember or guess how to find your shop.
How do you that? First, you have to buy the domain. I suggest you use GoDaddy because it’s cheaper and there’s a lot of documentation online. After purchasing your domain, follow this guide, written by an Etsy seller, to make the link.

Sell in other platforms

Etsy is the biggest and most famous platform to sell handmade and creative products, but in the last years, other platforms have come into the market. Some of them are free to use and they’re getting bigger. I suggest you to try another channel that can help increase your sales. If it doesn’t work, you can always delete it. The most famous are ArtFire (no fees, $12.95/monthly), Bonanza (completely free) and Storenvy (free with some paid features). I suggest you try Storenvy because is super simple to use, the design is very nice, and it’s integrated with Fanchimp.

This is one of the most effective ways to promote your products. However, the key to success is not the blog itself, but what your blog is about. Your blog shouldn’t be just an advertisement for your products. It should be a place where your readers can get to know more about yourself and your work; a place where they can interact with you and watch how you make your products. So do not publish post like,”I just listed these earrings, buy them here.” Instead, post something like, “Watch the post above to see the creation of my latest earrings.” If you don’t have many ideas of what to write about in your blog, consider the following topics: tutorials, personal reflections, things happening in your life, or comments about what’s happening around you.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that you need to write often, at least once a week, to increase your readers and followers.

Optimizing your shop

As you know, last October, Etsy changed their relevancy search, so now you have to optimize your shop in a different way. Etsy offered 3 tips to help optimize your shop listings:

  • Relevancy: Relevancy is the opposite of recency. In the old Etsy, if a person was searching for “yellow earrings”, they would see any items with those words in the title and the order of the items was based on when those earrings were listed. Now, you have to boost your relevancy factor with a good title, great images, and accurate tags.
  •  Update Your Photos: The images of your products are now more important for your sales. The competition on Etsy is huge and a great photo can make a big difference. I wrote about that in my previous post: “Quality photographs count! A key point when selling on Etsy“. If you want to know how to shoot better photos check out this video tutorial: “How to Shoot Great Photos of Jewels for Etsy (Stones, Bijoux, Croquets)
  • Review Your Shop Stats and Make Smart Changes

Social media marketing

I think you know perfectly well that social media marketing means Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. As for blogging, the most important thing is not if you have a page in every social network, but that you update them in the right way. Here are the most important tips, and you can find more in my previous posts:

  • Create just the pages that you’re going to update: Don’t create thousand blank pages; start with one and do it well.
  • Update your pages daily: This can sound strange, but it’s the key to gaining popularity on Facebook, where the competition between pages is huge.
  • Wait for the results: When you start a social media campaign you have to wait, because the results don’t come after one month. It’s like blogging and SEO; you have to keep going and then the results will come.
  • Engage: When somebody is engaging with you, reply to them as quickly as possible, because you can lose a sale. Please control your Twitter mentions; I noticed that a lot of sellers don’t reply to them.
